NBA: Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

It wasn’t the most beautiful of games—read our recap if you want to find out how ugly the game was—but when it mattered most, Donovan Mitchell stepped up for the Utah Jazz in a big way. The luxury of Bojan Bogdanovic was apparent when Mitchell had the energy to take on Jevon Carter who had been a bulldog on the defensive end all night to the rim and draw the foul. Devon Booker hit Donovan Mitchell on the arm to put him at the line and Donovan did what Donovan does best. Make the shot.

While Suns fans will be frustrated by the foul call—a lot of refs might swallow their whistle in a situation like this—no one can be surprised that in a game that featured 57 foul calls that we’d escape the final seconds without the zebras being involved. Donovan forced the call, got to the line and iced the game. Then missed the final free throw so Phoenix couldn’t advance the ball and inbound it at halfcourt.

It wasn’t pretty. But this is the type of game Utah may not have won last year. To be one of the best teams in the NBA, you gotta win ugly and pretty. And tonight, it was pretty darn ugly.

What do you think? Should the referees have called the foul in those final seconds? Sound off in the comments below.
